The Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Bower School of Music & the Arts is proving that world-class talent can flourish right here in Estero and Southwest Florida.

In an extraordinary series of accomplishments, two FGCU pianists have reached the pinnacle of the classical music world—earning national honors, competing alongside students from the country’s most prestigious conservatories, and bringing international recognition back to Florida.

Earlier this year, Quang Vo treated attendees to his musical talent at Engage Estero’s “Don Eslick Person of the Year Award” for 2025, earning a well-deserved standing ovation. It was clear to everyone present that Quang was a truly special musician.

A National Spotlight for Estero’s Local Musicians

Recently, Quang Vo and Duy Vu were selected as two of only eight semi-finalists in the prestigious Piano Arts North American Piano Competition in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The achievement is remarkable. Across North American universities, only FGCU in Estero and The Juilliard School placed two pianists in the semi-finals. The other competitors represented elite institutions, including the Curtis Institute of Music, Yale University, and Northwestern University. For a young music program, it was a defining moment—and a powerful statement that FGCU belongs among the nation's finest.

Rising to the Challenge

After an intense week of demanding performances, Quang advanced even further, earning one of just three coveted spots in the finals, where finalists performed concertos with the acclaimed Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

"The level of competition was extraordinary," said Professor Michael Baron. "I am very proud of both Duy and Quang for not only holding their own but excelling with some of the best young pianists in the country."

Competing against some of the finest young pianists in North America, Quang demonstrated extraordinary artistry, while fellow FGCU pianist Duy Vu distinguished himself in an exceptionally talented field.

Bringing Home the Honors

Quang concluded the competition with an impressive collection of awards:

• Second Prize: Piano Arts North American Piano Competition (with a split among the three judges, 2-to-1 for first place)
• Audience Communication Prize
• Junior Jury Prize

His combined awards totaled $9,400. Duy also earned recognition as a semi-finalist, receiving a $1,000 prize.

Perhaps even more impressive than the awards themselves was what they symbolized: FGCU students outperforming competitors from some of the world's most renowned music schools.

An International Victory in France

If the national success wasn't enough, Quang's remarkable year reached an even greater pinnacle.

Competing in France at the Samson François International Piano Competition, Quang captured First Prize in the Young Artist Division. He was one of only 25 pianists worldwide selected for the finals, representing countries including France, Japan, South Korea, China, Germany, Great Britain, Ukraine, Finland, Poland, Taiwan, Ireland, Turkey, and the United States. To emerge as the competition's top performer among such an elite international field is an extraordinary accomplishment.

According to Professor Michael Baron, one member of the international jury from the Netherlands remarked that selecting Quang for First Prize was an easy decision—a powerful testament to his artistry, technical mastery, and musical maturity.

Another International Artistic Triumph 

We are pleased to shine the light on another of FGCU’s talented pianists, Le Phuong Pham.

Le Phuong Pham, a piano performance major at Florida Gulf Coast University, performed Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 on August 2 with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Honna Tetsuji. The concert took place at the Grand Concert Hall of the Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi.

Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is widely regarded as one of the most demanding works in the piano repertoire, requiring extraordinary technical command, stamina, musical maturity, and interpretive depth. For Le Phuong to undertake this formidable work at such a young age is an exceptional accomplishment. Most remarkably, she has become the youngest female pianist ever to perform the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto in Vietnam.

Le Phuong’s achievement is especially meaningful to the Bower School of Music & the Arts at FGCU. Her performance is not only an extraordinary personal milestone but also a powerful testament to the artistic preparation and international opportunities available to students at Florida Gulf Coast University. Under Dr. Michael Baron’s guidance, Le Phuong continues to develop as an artist of remarkable ability, bringing distinction to FGCU through performances on the international stage.

As stated previously, as FGCU's music program continues to gain national and international recognition, one thing is increasingly clear: some of the world's finest young musicians are making Southwest Florida their home. FGCU has become a destination for exceptional musical talent.
