East Corkscrew Road was erected in the 1930s, and in the early 2020’s, major expansions were implemented, transferring it from two to four lanes (2 on both sides). This change is due to the increasing population in Lee County. In another Engage Estero article it says, “Ongoing and future road projects mean traffic patterns will keep changing. Widening brings temporary delays but ultimately increases capacity and safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists” (Engage Estero). The people in Lee County are constantly worried about the traffic in the area, especially in the busy season, but the changes to the road will help that significantly. Before all the construction work, East Corkscrew road was a simple rural road surrounded by open land. Lee County had to change and they began to start implementing projects to expand and make East Corkscrew better. Not only will the changes affect cars, but it will support the safety of people by adding traffic lights, sidewalks, wildlife crossing, and cyclist lanes.
Talking with some of the locals, we heard mixed reviews about the expansion. Many people are in favor of these improvements because it makes travel easier, but more importantly, safer. However, others expressed concerns about the construction. They feel like the expansion has or will boost residency and traffic, taking away from what was once a quiet rural scenery. Although some people have concerns about the project, others believe it is necessary for growing a community. Roads must be able to maintain and handle increased traffic; otherwise, congestion would make daily travel more difficult for people.
The road has helped with non-resident’s lives as-well. Tourists use the road for all of their various excursions whether it is going to play mini golf or driving to the beach from their vacation homes. The road provides a critical use of transportation, connecting residential developments with major highways and cities, which makes it necessary for an upgrade. Overall, it’s important to understand both sides of the matter. What started as a quiet backwoods area is turning into a heavily used route. In the end, it is vital for expansion to help maintain a steady flow of traffic.
