Up to 52 million taxpayer dollars were budgeted for the expansion of Corkscrew Road, but up until now, residents have seen nothing but traffic and nuisance in return. Before Fort Myers and Corkscrew Road became what it is today, there was a rugged settlement of Calousa Indians who populated the land of citrus groves and wildlife. This all drastically changed after the freezes of 1980, transforming Fort Myers from an agriculture centered city to a rapidly growing suburban community. Corkscrew Road was groundbreaking when it was first built. It started as a two-lane rural road, and now it is a major hub of transportation and connection.

Ever since being founded in 1935, the road has seen a significant amount of traffic, development, and expansion; however, now it faces the problem of congestion and a decrease of road safety due to an influx of residential and mixed development. This causes the quality of life in Estero to come into question.

Other major complications following the expansion of the road are the environmental and wildlife concerns, specifically because of the Corkscrew Watershed, a critically important ecosystem that prevents flooding and reduces the effects of storm surges. The expansion of Corkscrew Road has contributed to a more rapid drainage, drying out of the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. There are many restoration efforts in place to solve this issue.

At right a map of Estero / Fort Myers in 1935 can be seen, with the Corkscrew Road highlighted in light blue. It now extends up to FL-82 on the border with Immokalee. There are also multiple sources such as that from estero-fl.gov that show their projected plans for  Corkscrew Road, giving us more than enough reason to talk about the effects they will have.

And as such, without going into expensive and complicated projects, we want to propose the following solutions to some of the problems faced in the area. First, we would recommend the use of sound barriers especially around the intersection between I75 and Corkscrew Road. They will lessen the noise pollution that nearby residents and wildlife incur. With the expansion of the road, public transit should be taken into consideration, including improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, such as 10-foot-wide pathways that could serve as an alternative transportation method for residents in the area. These solutions would improve the quality of life in the area surrounding Corkscrew Road and allow the locals to have a say in their community.
