Every community has those rare individuals whose presence quietly lifts everyone around them. For Estero, Lanell, and Jim Shields have been exactly that, steady hands, generous hearts, and joyful partners in shaping the place we are proud to call home.
As they prepare to leave Estero for a new chapter closer to their daughter in Yorktown, Virginia, the Engage Estero leadership and Board of Trustees join the entire community in expressing our deepest gratitude and warmest wishes.
For more than two decades, Lanell and Jim have been woven into the story of Estero’s growth. From their home in Grandezza, they devoted countless hours to strengthening our community, not for applause but because they believed in what Estero could become. If dedication were a sport, the Shields would be perennial MVPs.
Jim’s leadership, paired with Lanell’s unwavering support and tireless work with Breaking Par for Lead Estero, helped raise several hundred thousand dollars in scholarships for local students. That’s not just generosity; it’s changing lives, opening doors, and giving young people the confidence to dream bigger.
Their commitment to Junior Achievement has been equally transformative. Through their support, students across our region have gained financial literacy and leadership skills and have come to believe they can shape their own futures. The ripple effects of that work will be felt for generations.
Jim’s civic engagement has also left a lasting imprint. Through his involvement with the Estero Council of Community Leaders, now Engage Estero, he helped guide conversations and initiatives that shaped the village we know today. His thoughtful voice and steady presence made our community stronger, more informed, and more united.
And then there is Forging a Better Path, the book Jim coauthored with our president, Allan Bowditch. This important work captures Estero’s history and the spirit of the citizens who built it. It stands as a testament to the vision, perseverance, and community pride that have defined Estero for more than 20 years. Jim’s role in preserving that story is a gift to us all.
Lanell and Jim’s legacy is not a single project or accomplishment. It is the sum of years of leadership, generosity, wisdom, and kindness. It is the example they set – that community thrives when people care enough to give their time, talent, and heart.
While we will miss seeing them at community meetings, events, and around town, we are truly happy they will be closer to family. Virginia is gaining two treasures, and we hope they know how lucky they are. From all of us at Engage Estero: Lanell and Jim, thank you for your service, your heart, your humor, and for believing in Estero and helping it become the vibrant, connected, and caring community it is today.
We wish you joy, good health, and wonderful new adventures in the years ahead. Your legacy will always be part of Estero’s story.
