I have authored a few articles in the past for Engage Estero titled, “Where do I Live?”. This was necessitated resulting from numerous conversations with Greater Estero Residents.

Understanding that most of us are from somewhere north, our entire municipality had one zip code, one phone exchange, one fire rescue department, and one county commissioner.

Unfortunately, we do not have that luxury in the Greater Estero Area. Within the Village of Estero, we have 5 different zip codes, 3 different fire rescue departments, and 2 county commissioners. The Village of Estero was established long after zip codes, fire districts, and commissioner districts were established. Interesting enough, Cape Coral is the only other municipality split between 2 Lee County Commissioner districts.

Corkscrew Rd North and US 41 East are Commissioner Pendergrass’s district. Corkscrew Rd South and US 41 West are Commissioner Mulicka’s district. The developing Kingston could be a split commissioner district as they have communities on both sides of Corkscrew Rd.

Coconut Rd South is protected by the Bonita Springs Fire Rescue. San Carlos Park Fire Rescue protects Estero Parkway North. It only matters on your tax bill as the 3 Fire Rescue Districts have a “closest unit response” agreement.

Coconut Rd South resides within 2 Bonita Springs zip codes. Estero Parkway North is assigned a Ft Myers zip code. This only matters when you have to pick up a package from the Post Office. The Ft Myers Post office is next to Page Field in Ft Myers. The Bonita Springs Post office is located at Old 41 and Shangri-La  Rd. The Estero Post Office P. O. boxes have a 33929 zip code.

Communities outside the Village limits may also have an Estero zip code. This zip code issue was brought to the attention of the Estero Postal Chief and Florida Congressional Representatives from several Village Council members. No action. Eventually Congressman Bryon Donalds (FL-19) co-sponsored a bill to correct this. Unfortunately, with the current congressional infighting, this bill has no traction.
