New Options for Women Undergoing Mammograms
The proportion of women who complain about the pain of mammograms varies. However, studies suggest that between 25% and 50% of women report experiencing some level of discomfort or pain during the procedure.
The degree of pain can depend on factors like the individual’s pain threshold, breast size, hormonal fluctuations, and the skill of the technician performing the mammogram. When an irregularity is suspected, more detailed examinations and greater pressure are required, which can be more painful.
Breast imaging studies such as mammograms, ultrasound, and MRI are the gold standard for detecting and evaluating breast cancer. Mammograms have been proven to decrease breast cancer deaths and allow for early detection, resulting in less aggressive treatments. Although discomfort can be associated with mammograms, breast centers can provide a relaxed and comfortable environment and the most advanced equipment to improve the patient experience during the procedure.
Dr. Cherrie Morris MD, Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Lee Health, said, “Patients are encouraged to discuss any concerns with their healthcare providers and experienced mammography technicians. This collaboration can help reduce anxiety and address any questions they may have.”
There are ongoing efforts to improve the comfort of the procedure, including newer technologies like 3D mammography and advances in machine design.
One such company is Koning Health‘s mammogram procedure, which utilizes the Koning Vera Breast CT (KBCT). This procedure appears to offer several advantages over traditional mammography, though there are some considerations to keep in mind.
Pros:
- No Breast Compression: KBCT eliminates the need for painful breast compression, providing a more comfortable experience for patients.
- High-Resolution 3D Imaging: The technology produces accurate isotropic 3D images, allowing for detailed breast tissue visualization and potentially improving early-stage cancer detection.
- Short Scan Time: With a rapid scanning time of approximately 7 seconds per breast, KBCT reduces patients’ time in the imaging process.
- Comparable Radiation Dose: The radiation dose from KBCT is reported to be in the same range as that of traditional mammograms, maintaining a balance between image quality and patient safety.
Cons:
- Availability: As of March 2025, KBCT is available in select locations, including Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Knoxville, TN; Little Rock, AR; and New York City, NY. Patients outside these areas may have limited access.
- Contrast Dye Requirement: While not always necessary, some KBCT procedures may require the injection of a contrast dye, which involves additional preparation and may not be suitable for all patients.
- Cost and Insurance Coverage: The cost of KBCT may vary, and insurance coverage can differ by provider and region. It’s advisable to check with local healthcare facilities and insurance providers for specific information.
Koning Health’s KBCT presents a promising advancement in breast imaging, offering improved comfort and potentially enhanced diagnostic capabilities. However, as indicated above, it is still being carefully evaluated and may not be suitable for everyone.
Dr Morris explained that Lee Health’s investigative imaging team is evaluating the Koning system. When more information is available, the Engage Estero team will provide an update on this issue.
