The Village with a Vision: How Estero Took Control of Its Future
Most communities grow by chance. Estero grew by choice.
In 2014, residents of Estero made a bold move—they voted to incorporate and form their own village government. This wasn’t a rebellion; it was a vision. For years, locals had watched neighboring communities develop in ways that didn’t reflect their values: overcrowding, uncontrolled sprawl, and vanishing green space. Estero’s residents said, “Not here.”
By incorporating, Estero finalized years of zoning, development standards, and community planning. The goal? Protect the character of the area while supporting thoughtful, sustainable growth. This citizen-led decision means residents now have a voice in how their village evolves.
From carefully managed commercial corridors to protections for its historic and natural resources, Estero’s unique incorporation story is a rare Florida example of proactive governance—and it’s one of the many reasons this village is more than just a place to live. It’s a place built on purpose.

Progress Worth Celebrating
Estero on the Rise:
Consistently ranked as one of the safest and most desirable communities in Southwest Florida, Estero is attracting new families, businesses, and investors without sacrificing its small-village feel.
Preserving Paradise:
The Village continues to acquire and preserve natural lands—like the recent River Oaks Preserve acquisition—ensuring green space remains central to Estero’s identity.
Smart Development:
New projects like Estero Crossing and carefully reviewed mixed-use developments bring housing, dining, and walkability together—without the sprawl seen in nearby areas.
Infrastructure Improvements:
Major investments in stormwater management, roadway safety, and bike/pedestrian connectivity are making the village more resilient and livable for all.
Civic Engagement:
Through public forums, surveys, and advisory boards, residents continue to play an active role in shaping the village’s priorities—including decisions on the 100-acre sports & entertainment complex and future land use planning.
A Village with a Vision:
An upcoming “Future of Estero” forum and the Village’s long-term comprehensive plan update will help ensure that the next decade of growth is as thoughtful as the last.
Estero stands out because it stands for something—a community that’s both forward-looking and firmly rooted in protecting quality of life. That’s a legacy worth celebrating.
