Bonita Estero Rail Trail:

Momentum Builds Toward Construction

The Bonita Estero Rail Trail (BERT) continues to gain traction as our community edges closer to turning the former Seminole Gulf Railway corridor into a 14.9-mile recreational trail linking Bonita Springs and Estero. Engage Estero has supported the plans since the initial suggestions were put forward. We applaud the continued work of the BERT organization.

Recent milestones:

  • A purchase agreement has been secured with Seminole Gulf Railway for the rail corridor.
  • Nearly all of the $35.2 million funding goal has been pledged, with Estero, Bonita Springs, and Collier County making major commitments. Only about $2.2 million remains.
  • In June 2025, the State of Florida added Phase 1 (11.4 miles) of the BERT corridor to the Florida Forever Program, making it eligible for state-level conservation and recreation funds.
  • Community backing continues to grow — with more than 30 local HOAs endorsing the project and recent celebrations raising over $100,000 in donations and pledges.

What’s next:

  • The Trust for Public Land and Friends of BERT are working to close the final funding gap.
  • Planning efforts, including the Project Development & Environment (PD&E) study, are ongoing.
  • Additional community events and information sessions are expected this fall to keep residents engaged and updated.

Looking ahead: Once full funding is secured and the PD&E study is complete, construction of the trail could take approximately 18–24 months.

The BERT promises not just a new trail, but a new way for our community to connect — from neighborhoods to nature.
