An environmentally sensitive site of 1,800+ acres in eastern Lee County, which is home to the endangered Florida panther and surrounded by preserves, is at risk of becoming a 781-acre mine pit, permanently removing habitats for state and federally protected species including: crested caracara, bald eagle, wood stork, Florida sandhill crane, roseate spoonbill, little blue heron, snowy egret, tri-colored heron, and Big Cypress fox squirrel.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has the ability to deny the request for a 404 Clean Water Act permit based on the need to protect wildlife habitat, wetlands and conservation lands.
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida has set up an easy and quick way for you to send a customized message to the FDEP urging them to protect these important habitats. Please read the background material available, personalize your message and send it today.
